What is a loading shovel?
A loading shovel is a vehicle attached with shovel designed to perform heavy-duty tasks in earthwork and construction operations. This shovel has specific capabilities to accomplish the loading tasks.

What does the Tuppco training course include?
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
- Have a working Knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for loading shovel use
- Conduct all necessary Safety checks at the Work area
- Prepare the loading shovel for use, Operate machinery safely and efficiently
- Environmental considerations
- Storage and transport of implements and attachments
- Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

- Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre machine
- Bulk loads to load and move
- Varying terrain and slopes
- Suitable vehicle/hopper to load

Theory Assessment:
- 25 multiple choice questions
- 4 marks per question
- 80% pass mark required

Practical Assessment Criteria
- Carry out pre-start and operational checks
- Drive and manoeuvre the machine on level terrain, gradients and rough ground
- Agree on positioning of the vehicle to be loaded
- Set the machine for work
- Load the vehicle with material from a stockpile, minimum of 5 loads
- Park and secure the machine away from the work area
Pass mark is less than 35 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
Time allowed is 1 hour 30 minutes

Objective Of Course
The goal of the Lantra Loading Shovel (EXC07) course is to ensure operators develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to operate loading shovels safely, efficiently, and productively while complying with industry standards.

- Understand the controls, functions, and capabilities of loading shovels
- Learn correct PPE requirements and operator responsibilities
- Carry out pre-start inspections, safety checks, and routine maintenance
- Operate the machine safely in various environments, including:
- Stockpiles
- Loading bays
- Waste yards
- Soft/uneven ground
- Confined spaces
- Perform safe and efficient loading, carrying, levelling, and tipping
- Use bucket attachments correctly and safely
- Understand and manage hazards such as:
- Roll-over risks
- Ground instability
- Pedestrian interaction
- Blind spots
- Overloading
- Enhance productivity while maintaining safe work practices
- Build operator confidence for real on-site work
