  • What is a road roller?

    A road roller is a compactor-type engineering vehicle used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations.

  • What does the Tuppco training course include?
    • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
    • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
    • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
    • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
    • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
    • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for roller use
    • Prepare the roller for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
    • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the Work area
    • Operate machinery safely and efficiently
    • Environmental considerations
    • Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for Machine transportation
    • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
  • Venue and Equipment Requirements:
    • Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre machine
    • 15 metre straight line of uncompacted material
    • 5 – 10 metres radius curve of uncompacted material 
    • Varying terrain and slopes
    • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
    • Suitable welfare facilities

  • Theory Assessment:
    • 25 multiple choice questions
    • 4 marks per question
    • 80% pass mark required
  • Practical Assessment Criteria
    • Pre use and operational checks
    • Compact straight line 4 x width 
    • Compact curve 4 x width 
    • Drive through chicane, forwards and backwards
    • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain

    Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

    Time allowed is 1 hour

Objective Of Course

The goal of the Lantra Ride-On Roller (ROL01) course is to ensure learners can operate ride-on rollers safely, effectively, and in line with industry best practices, reducing accidents and improving site productivity.

Key Course Objectives:
  • Understand the functions, controls, and limitations of ride-on rollers
  • Learn correct PPE requirements and safety responsibilities
  • Carry out pre-start checks, routine maintenance, and machine inspections
  • Operate the roller safely in a range of situations, including:
    • Forward and reverse travel
    • Confined spaces
    • Slopes and gradients
    • Edges, trenches, and soft ground
  • Apply effective compaction techniques
  • Learn safe working distances, signalling, and awareness of people and vehicles
  • Manage hazards including vibration exposure, roll-over risks, and ground instability
  • Build operator confidence and ensure compliance with workplace regulations

By the end of the training, participants will be able to use a ride-on roller safely and competently across all typical site conditions.
