What is the role of an excavation marshal banksman?
An excavation marshal banksman has the knowledge to be able to efficiently and effectively monitor and control the work and movement of mechanical excavators on a work site in accordance with company procedures.

What Does The Tuppco Training Course Include?
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an excavation marshal – banksman
- Have knowledge of the equipment to be used and be conversant with methods statements, risk assessments and permits to work
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for use
- Conduct all pre-excavating checks
- Agree communication signal and emergency procedures
- Safe positioning of excavation marshal banksman
- Define and identify the different types of underground services
- Identify the risks that excavations can present, and people may be affected
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Carry out exploratory tasks
- Identify the risks of excavating near to underground services, and the safe digging practices that should be adopted
- Carry out all end of shift and safe storage procedures

- Suitable and safe area to operate machine

Theory Assessment:
- 20 multiple choice questions
- 5 written questions
- 4 marks per question
- 80% pass mark required

Practical Assessment criteria:
- Pre use and operational checks of work area
- Hand dig zone prior to machine excavating
- Communication agreed before work starts
- Signal to machine operator start, stop, position spoil
- Signal to machine operator shutting procedure
Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

Objective Of Course
The aim of the NPORS Excavation Marshal / Banksman (N027) course is to ensure learners can monitor excavation activities safely, guide plant machinery, identify hazards, and prevent collapse or service strikes.
Key Course Objectives:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of an excavation marshal/banksman
- Identify ground hazards, collapse risks, and buried services
- Learn safe systems of work, including permit-to-dig requirements
- Communicate effectively using hand signals, radios, and visual cues
- Guide excavators safely in restricted, high-risk, or confined excavation areas
- Recognise hazards such as undermining, overhanging edges, and water ingress
- Monitor exclusion zones and ensure safe distance from plant equipment
- Develop the ability to spot developing risks and take preventive action
- Apply NPORS-approved methods for safe excavation operations
