  • What is a log handler?

    A log handler is used in mainly in the forestry and timber industry to move, place and organise logs. The machine is mainly based on an excavator design with a boom to swivel attachment to make the work of selecting materials easy.

  • What does the Tuppco training course include?
    • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
    • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
    • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
    • Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
    • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
    • Safely mount and dismount the machine
    • Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
    • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas/
    • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
    • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out processing tasks
    • Load and unload logs onto transport vehicles
    • Fit and remove attachments
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
    • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
  • Venue and equipment requirements:
    • Suitable and safe area to operate machinery
    • A range of logs to handle
    • Vehicle or trailer to load
    • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
    • Suitable welfare facilities
    • Material re-handler and attachments
    • Operators’ manual 
    • Risk assessment completed
  • Theory assessment:
    • 20 multiple choice questions
    • 5 written questions
    • 4 marks per question
    • 80% pass mark required
  • Practical assessment criteria:
      • Pre use and operational checks
      • Reverse log handler 30 metres in straight line
      • Travel through chicane forwards and backwards
      • Travel through restrictions
      • Load logs in to vehicle / tailer
      • End of use checks 

      Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

      Time allowed is 1 hour 45 minutes

Objective Of Course

The aim of the NPORS Log Handler (N107) course is to ensure learners can safely and efficiently operate log handling equipment, reducing risks and improving productivity in timber operations.

Key Course Objectives:
  • Understand the roles, responsibilities, and legal requirements for log handler operators
  • Identify and assess forestry and yard hazards, including uneven ground and unstable stacks
  • Perform pre-use checks, ensuring machine safety and readiness
  • Operate the log handler safely, including:
    • Picking up logs
    • Lifting and lowering techniques
    • Transporting loads
    • Stacking and placement
  • Understand load stability, machine limits, and safe travel
  • Apply correct use of attachments, such as grabs or forks
  • Maintain safe exclusion zones to protect others on site
  • Learn emergency procedures and safe shutdown methods
  • Build confidence to support daily timber handling in real work environments

By the end of the course, learners will be fully competent in safe log handling, contributing to safer and more efficient forestry and industrial operations.
