  • What is a material re-handler?

    A material re-handler is used in mainly in the waste management industry to move, place and organise materials. The machine is mainly based on an excavator design with a boom to swivel attachment to make the work of selecting materials easy.

  • What does the Tuppco training course include?
    • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
    • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
    • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
    • Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
    • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
    • Safely mount and dismount the machine
    • Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
    • Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas/
    • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
    • Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out processing tasks
    • Carry out processing task
    • Load material onto transporting vehicles, containers or processing plant
    • Fit and remove attachments
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
    • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
  • Venue and equipment requirements:
    • Suitable and safe area to operate machinery
    • Bulk material to load vehicle
    • Vehicle or hopper to load (dumper, trailer)
    • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
    • Suitable welfare facilities
    • Material re-handler and attachments
    • Operators’ manual 
    • Risk assessment completed
  • Theory assessment:
    • 20 multiple choice questions
    • 5 written questions
    • 4 marks per question
    • 80% pass mark required
  • Practical assessment criteria:
    • Pre use and operational checks
    • Travel through chicane forwards and backwards
    • Travel through restrictions
    • Load material into hopper / tailer
    • Sort materials and place 

    Pass mark is less than 30 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications

    Time allowed is 2 hours 15 minutes
